Genting acquires Maxims casino for £10.5million from Gala Group. The group then takes a 10.2 per cent share of Stanley Leisure, then Britain’s biggest casino group, buying 8million shares and ceding half of Maxims as part of the deal. Tan Sri Kok Thay Lim hails a separate joint venture with Stanley as a "significant point" in Genting's expansion plans in the UK.

After years of hard work – including the astounding feat of constructing an access road to the peak of Gunung Ulu Kali at 1,800 metres– the first hotel in the Genting Highlands Resort is completed. It quickly becomes a popular destination for Malaysian holidaymakers.


Genting founder Tan Sri Lim Goh Tong is inspired by the tranquil setting and cool air of the Cameron Highlands, north of Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur, while working on a hydroelectric power project. He dreams of building his own hill resort for his country folk in an area traditionally used by British colonials seeking refuge from the heat.
